Whatsapp has announced that the Status feature will have some new features coming up very soon, here they are:

You can now record and share voice messages as status messages, these can be up to 30 seconds long.

Privacy settings per status: You will be able to choose which contacts can actually view your status, and you can save this audience selection and use it as a default for your next status

Status reactions: will allow you to respond to status updates by swiping up and tapping one of the emojis, and also reply with a text, voice message or any sticker.

Status Profile ring: they will be present around your contacts profile picture whenever you share a new status update

Link previews enable: when you post a link the preview will automatically show up and make your status look better, this way your contacts can have a better idea of what the link is about before they tap on it.
